History

Alexis de Tocqueville, a historian who toured America in the 1930s, subsequently detailed his travels in Democracy in America. Among his most noble observations was a phenomenon he found unique to America: volunteerism.

In 1987, United Way of Greater St. Louis made the bold decision to form a select organization of philanthropists. Thus, the de Tocqueville Society was created to honor the spirit of the man who recognized one of our greatest strengths and shared that knowledge with the world.

Distinction

A rich history and profound passion for the community are hallmarks of the de Tocqueville Society. Members provide the bold vision and inspired generosity that invigorate United Way's mission to help people live their best possible lives.

More than 700 of this region's most dedicated philanthropists banded together to contribute over $22 million to shape the future of our region.
