5 Ways to Volunteer Virtually During COVID-19

Washing hands – check. Hand sanitizer – check. Social distancing – double-check. Volunteer opportunities – maybe? So many are managing the COVID-19 crisis for themselves and loved ones but are also wanting to help the community. Volunteering is challenging when group activities are restricted, but thanks to technology (and some creativity!), you can still make an impact in your community through virtual volunteerism. There are user-friendly volunteer options available for all levels and you can do them while you #stayhome.

Here are 5 ways to help those affected by COVID-19 without leaving your living room.

Administrative or clerical work.

With so many nonprofits strained for live volunteers, lending your typing, data entry, or computer skills is a great way to assist local nonprofits in disseminating information to the community about COVID-19 resources and information.

Caring calls.

Seniors are an at-risk group for COVID-19, so many are quarantined alone in their homes. Volunteer to make friendly phone calls to assigned seniors on a regular basis to help them deal with loneliness, isolation, and general well-being.

Volunteer Reader.

Some communities offer audio-reader programs for people who are unable to read standard print due to vision loss, physical or learning disability, mobility challenges, or age. Readings are done from your home via telephone, using your newspaper subscription or the company online subscription. Readings are once per week, two hours or less in length. Auditions may be required.

Make a DIY mask.

Our Volunteer Center has created a step-by-step guide on how to create a DIY face mask to help frontline workers get the protection they need. Donate your masks to St. Luke’s Hospital, Lutheran Senior Services or the St. Louis ARC to help their workers serve our most vulnerable population while staying protected. Find other donation locations on STLVolunteer.org.

Give a gift.

United Way’s COVID-19 Response was created to support communities every day, for every need during these rapidly changing times. United Way’s COVID-19 Response will support organizations that are providing resources right now to community members impacted by this crisis. In fact, thanks to your generosity, we’re funding 11 local nonprofits’ COVID-19 response efforts through our Phase 1 funding. These funds will help address the many hardships individuals and families face during the crisis.

While “traditional” volunteering might be on hold, you can still make an impact. With your support, community nonprofits can continue to respond to the community’s needs during this challenging time.
