In a remarkable show of community spirit, United Way of Greater Saint Louis (UWGSL), Labor Engagement labor liaisons, Building Union Diversity (BUD) students, members of Laborers’ Local 110, MOWIT, and Carpenters’ Union members joined forces on Saturday, October 12, and November 16, to tackle much-needed small labor projects at the headquarters of UWGSL nonprofit partner, Employment Connection of St. Louis.
The volunteers rolled up their sleeves to tackle various improvement projects, including assembling new storage bins, replacing damaged ceiling tiles throughout the facility, moving outdated electronics and worn-out furniture from the basement for disposal, and installing new organizing shelving in their Clothing Closet and Swag Room.
The events, organized by the UWGSL Labor Department, aimed to create a more functional and welcoming environment for Employment Connection’s staff and clients. “It is because of unions and their members like Laborers, Carpenters, and future union members from the BUD Program that our community becomes stronger, more compassionate, and united,” said Sonja Gholston-Byrd, VP of Labor Engagement with United Way.
The UWGSL labor department will host more volunteer days in the coming year, welcoming individuals and groups from the Labor Community to support United Way’s mission.
