United Way of Greater St. Louis Celebrates $264,000 Raised Through Divine 9 Challenge

Historically Black Greek Organizations unite to strengthen families across the region

The United Way of Greater St. Louis (UWGSL) Charmaine Chapman Society’s (CCS) Divine 9 members raised over $264,000 through its Divine 9 Challenge, an initiative of UWGSL’s Black philanthropy efforts.  The challenge among CCS members from Black Fraternities and Sororities in the St. Louis Region provides a friendly fundraising competition. Each CCS member gives an annual donation of $1,000 or more to UWGSL that helps 160 local nonprofits that UWGSL funds.

“The Charmaine Chapman Society continues to embody our efforts to empower people and multiply our impact, and we are so proud that members continue to set a high standard for philanthropic excellence,” said Michelle D. Tucker, President and CEO of United Way of Greater St. Louis. “Our Divine 9 Challenge was such a success because our CCS members continue to unite for the greater good of the community by giving to United Way through this challenge. Working together, our leadership donors help us fulfill our mission to help people live their best possible lives.”

Delta Sigma Theta and Kappa Alpha Psi led the way, with Delta Sigma Theta raising $70,236 and Kappa Alpha Psi raising $57,367 respectively. The winners were announced last week at the CCS Together We Shine event.

CCS is one of the top Black philanthropic groups in the nation, raising over $110 million since their inception in 1994. Their efforts support the UWGSL community campaign that looks to raise funds to support individuals and families throughout the St. Louis region.

The organizations raised the following amounts:

Sororities:

Delta Sigma Theta: $70,236

Alpha Kappa Alpha: $54,745

Sigma Gamma Rho: $5,800

Fraternities:
