Local disaster assistance organizations are opening one-stop recovery centers in our service area to assist people affected by the recent flash flooding impacting our region.

These Multi-Agency Resource Centers (MARCs) will have trained English and Spanish-speaking caseworkers available to help people create personal recovery plans, navigate paperwork, and locate assistance for their specific disaster-caused needs, such as debris removal, mucking and gutting (clean up), mold remediation, groceries, rent, medication, etc. Representatives from government, nonprofit, and religiously-affiliated disaster relief organizations will also be on hand at the MARCs to assist disaster survivors.

Individuals and families can meet with agencies for referrals or other long-term recovery services if their family is not eligible for government assistance or where additional supports are needed.

Earlier this week, families across the St. Louis region were impacted by rains leading to significant flooding throughout our bi-state region. Our hearts go out to these neighbors and we stand beside the community now and throughout the recovery process.

Many impacted individuals do not have flood insurance or may not have even been located within a certified flood zone given the nature of the rapid and devastating flash flooding.

As the region’s front door during times of crisis, we want to share a brief update regarding United Way’s immediate and ongoing efforts:

  • Our response and recovery efforts began immediately.
  • So far, 200 families have been assisted through 2-1-1 within the first 24 hours of impact across our region in both IL and MO.
  • We have convened with partners addressing the emerging needs, began publishing vetted resources for the community, and activated our Volunteer Center to mobilize individuals to support recovery efforts.
  • United Way’s Flood Relief Fund has been activated to support immediate and long-term recovery efforts as well as crisis response partners that are equipped and trained to respond in times of natural disaster.
  • 100% of flood relief funds collected will be deployed in response to activities to this crisis and in partnership with Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) and Long Term Recovery Committees (LTRC).
  • Immediate focus and support includes mass feeding, sheltering, clean-up activities, purchase of needed supplies and support for skilled volunteers who will help aid the recovery process. Note: United Way serves as the fiscal agent for the St. Louis City/County COAD and also supports COADs in other affected counties.
  • Long-term recovery efforts will focus on returning displaced and impacted households to safe, sanitary and secure conditions.

Donations made through United Way follow our set response agenda and are tracked for impacts and outcomes throughout the response and recovery periods.

More information about resources and services for individuals and families impacted will continue to be added to https://www.211helps.org as they are available.
